Are you looking for ways to add more creativity, playfulness and connection in your life?

Hi!  I’m Shelley King, the owner & Chief Executive Puppeteer of Puppeteria.

In my experience, creativity & playfulness are two of the most significant factors to build connections and deepen relationships.  My motivation in creating workshops, webinars & courses, is to share with you the strategies, tools and processes I learned, developed, and implemented over the past 15 years and will allow you to incorporate more creativity and playfulness into your life.  By supporting you as a care-giver, social worker, and/or educator, a ripple effect is created that greatly benefits the people you care for, whether family members, clients, or students.

This is how my journey got started.  Like so many people with aging and ailing parents, I spent a lot of time visiting my mom in her hospital room as she continued to deteriorate physically, mentally and emotionally, with less and less hope of recovery. I was at a loss as to how to create joyful and meaningful ways to spend time together. My visits left me feeling stressed, upset, frustrated, sad and helpless. I also felt guilty that I couldn’t do more for her.

It wasn’t until after my mom’s death that I discovered the joy and connection that results from the use of expressive arts, puppetry and storytelling with people of all ages and abilities. In the 15 years following my mom’s death, I completed my university diploma in social work, earned a university certificate in family supports, completed my certification and training as an expressive arts facilitator, and studied & practiced puppetry arts. Since then, I have worked with hundreds of individuals - some with developmental disabilities, some with mental health challenges, some who are survivors of abuse, and some who are living in long term care. Regardless of age or ability, the use of puppetry and expressive arts are two of the most powerful tools for building relationships, augmenting communication, problem-solving, storytelling, educating, healing and simply having fun and playing. It is the answer I was looking for all those years ago with my mom.

In 2013, I started my business, Puppeteria, to share the magic and power of using puppetry with others. I’ve used puppetry as a tool and coached hundreds of care-givers, social workers, and educators on how to use puppetry and expressive arts in their professional practices. It is exciting and rewarding to witness the impact puppetry has on so many lives. You too will benefit greatly from including puppetry in your toolkit! I look forward to supporting you in the important work you do with others.

Creatively yours,
